6 Reasons Why Student-Athletes Make The Best Employees

Vichien Petchmai

Often times, student-athletes are hired by employers without spending a single day with work experience.  Here’s six reasons why athletes still have a leg up on the competition:

1. Waking up before the sun rises for 6am workouts teaches discipline…  This discipline comes from forgoing the late-night college scene, knowing that you have workouts in the morning.  Employers are looking for candidates that can show up to work on time and be diligent in their efforts on the job.

2. Spending 20 hours each week at practice while enrolled as a full-time student is another blessing in disguise for student-athletes… This rigorous schedule teaches organization and time management.  Student athletes will have these traits mastered after 4 years of practice before entering the workforce.

3. College athletes are competing among the best of the best in some of the hardest sports in the world.  A lack of mental resilience will not take you where you want to be in sport or school.  Athletes are competitive in nature and fear the thought of someone else working harder than them, so you can guarantee that they will be putting their best foot forward in the workforce.

4. Nothing can teach working towards one common goal like the culture of a sports team.  Athletes spend countless hours each week with their teammates, creating strong bonds and respect for one another.  Nothing is more comforting than knowing that they will ALWAYS have your back.  Everyone at the office will want a former athlete as their coworker.

5. Student athletes are serious about success and setting personal goals that will better the team.  This is easily translated to any job field as employees are key players in the overall success of a company, no matter how small.

6. Most importantly, nothing can teach you how to devote your entire life to something you are so passionate about and love every single minute of it like college athletics can.  Finding a job that you are so incredibly passionate about will only lead to incredible things.

These glory days were some of the longest and hardest of my life, but I can easily say that athletics has taught me more important life lessons than school ever will

Nothing can teach you the importance of determination and hard work like athletics can… and nothing will ever teach you the importance of sacrifice like college athletics can.

Nothing can teach you the importance of determination and hard work like athletics can… and nothing will ever teach you the importance of sacrifice like college athletics can.

Unfortunately, continuing our athletic endeavors at the professional level has incredibly unfavorable statistics. Instead, we train all our life knowing that a day in the not-so-distant future will hold our retirement.

Although this may not seem ideal, we will never realize what we had until it is abruptly taken from us.  We never thought we would miss the 6am workouts or the repetitive, monotonous practices. But when it’s all said and done, we are going to miss the eternal grind and the intense atmosphere, but it will never disappear completely.

These six traits can easily be transferred to the work force, making these elite level athletes credible contenders for the best employees.
